Tour Overview

What You’ll Experience

This 6-day private tour takes you through five of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding regions — beginning with the baby elephants of Pinnawala and the sacred temples of Kandy, rising into the misty tea highlands of Nuwara Eliya where you’ll hike waterfalls, pluck tea and raft jungle rivers, then descending to Bentota’s golden Indian Ocean beach for river safaris, sea turtles and water sports, before culminating in a vibrant day and night exploring Colombo — Sri Lanka’s cosmopolitan capital of colonial landmarks, ancient temples and buzzing nightlife. All in a private vehicle, at your own pace, with everything arranged for you.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your Journey Day by Day

01
Airport → Pinnawala → Kandy
Elephant Orphanage, Sacred Temples & Cultural Show
Welcome at Bandaranaike International Airport — private A/C transfer north
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage — watch elephant families bathe in the Maha Oya River (morning or afternoon session)
Arrive Kandy: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Dalada Maligawa) — Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist shrine
Kandy Lake promenade — peaceful stroll around the man-made reservoir at the heart of the city
Kandy Viewpoint — panoramic views over the city, hills and surrounding valley
Evening: traditional Kandyan cultural dance & fire show — masks, drumming, acrobatics and fire-walking
💡 TipVisit Pinnawala at the 10am elephant bathing session for the most spectacular river experience. At Kandy, attend the 6:30pm evening Puja ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth — the atmosphere of drums, incense and flickering oil lamps is deeply moving.
🏨 Overnight: Kandy (Heritage Boutique Hotel)
02
Kandy → Nuwara Eliya
Botanical Gardens, Gem Museum & Tea Country
Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens — 60 hectares of orchids, giant bamboo, royal palms and exotic flora
Gem Museum & Ceylon gem factory — discover how Sri Lanka’s world-famous sapphires and rubies are cut and polished
Scenic highland drive to Nuwara Eliya via the spectacular Ramboda Falls — a tiered waterfall cascading 109m
Bhaktha Hanuman Temple — a striking hillside Hindu temple linked to the Ramayana with sweeping valley views
Evening: explore Nuwara Eliya’s charming colonial town — the post office, racecourse and Hill Club
💡 TipThe Peradeniya Botanical Gardens are most beautiful in the early morning — visit before 9am to enjoy peaceful walks under the giant Javan fig tree. At the gem factory, there’s no obligation to buy — focus on the fascinating free demonstration of gem cutting and polishing.
🏨 Overnight: Nuwara Eliya (Hill Country Hotel)
03
Nuwara Eliya
Tea Plucking, Highland Waterfalls & White Water Rafting
Gregory Lake — a scenic colonial-era reservoir; morning walk or optional horse ride along the shore
Seetha Amman Temple — colourful, atmospheric Hindu temple linked to the Ramayana legend at Sita Eliya
Royal Post Office, Nuwara Eliya — one of Sri Lanka’s most charming colonial post offices, still in operation
St. Clair’s Falls — Sri Lanka’s widest waterfall, known as the ‘Little Niagara’, dramatic even in dry season
Full Ceylon tea plantation walk & factory tour — tea plucking activity with estate workers (wear a basket!)
White water rafting at Kitulgala on the Kelani River (Grade 2–3) — jungle gorge scenery, suitable for beginners
💡 TipSt. Clair’s Falls is most impressive after rain — the twin cascades are spectacular. Book Kitulgala rafting via your driver the night before. The 2-hour rafting experience is a perfect adrenaline activity — life jackets and helmets are always provided. Tea plucking is best in the morning when workers are most active.
🏨 Overnight: Nuwara Eliya (Hill Country Hotel — 2nd Night)
04
Nuwara Eliya → Bentota
Turtle Hatchery, River Safari & Beach Water Sports
Drive south from the highlands to Bentota’s golden Indian Ocean beach (~3.5 hours via scenic route)
Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery — ethical sea turtle conservation centre; see nesting turtles, protected eggs and baby hatchlings
Madu River mangrove boat safari (~1.5 hours) — glide through ancient lagoon ecosystems, spot monitor lizards, water birds and visit a cinnamon island
Water sports at Bentota Beach — jet skiing, banana boat, windsurfing, wake boarding or kayaking (optional, charged separately)
Evening: sunset stroll on Bentota’s beach; fresh seafood dinner at a beachside restaurant
💡 TipThe Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery releases baby turtles into the sea most evenings around sunset — try to time your visit for this magical moment. The Madu River safari is the most tranquil, wildlife-rich experience of this tour — don’t skip it! The mangrove ecosystem is ancient, serene and full of surprises.
