What You’ll Experience

This 8-day private tour is Proudy Lanka Tours’ most comprehensive itinerary — a grand sweep of Sri Lanka’s greatest highlights across seven distinct regions. You begin at the ancient UNESCO rock fortress of Sigiriya, the golden cave temples of Dambulla and the dramatic Pidurangala Rock sunrise. Day 2 adds the rare 8th-century Nalanda Gedige shrine and Kandy’s sacred temples. Nuwara Eliya fills Day 3 with botanical gardens, tea plucking, highland temples and Gregory Lake. Day 4 takes you south to Ella — Ravana Falls, the famous Little Adam’s Peak hike and the iconic Nine Arch Bridge. Two full days at Bentota cover beach life, river safaris and the magical Madu Ganga wetlands and Kosgoda turtle hatchery. Rock Fortresses, Cave Temples & Wildlife Safari

Welcome at Bandaranaike International Airport — private A/C transfer north to Sigiriya (~4.5 hours)

Sigiriya Rock Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage, 5th century) — 200m climb through the famous royal water gardens, cloud maiden frescoes and mirror wall to the spectacular summit palace ruins

Dambulla Golden Cave Temple — five extraordinary caves containing 157 Buddha statues and 2,100 sq m of ancient murals; the finest cave temple complex in all of Asia

Pidurangala Rock — climb the boulder-strewn alternative summit directly opposite Sigiriya for the best wide-angle panoramic view of Sigiriya Rock (ideal at sunrise or late afternoon)

Golden Temple of Dambulla — the gleaming white stupa and golden Buddha at the base of the Dambulla cliff, dramatically visible from the surrounding plains

Optional: Minneriya National Park jeep safari — famous for the ‘Gathering’ (July–October) when up to 300 wild elephants congregate at the ancient reservoir

💡 TipStart Sigiriya at 7am — the climb is far cooler and the frescoes are better lit in morning light. For a truly spectacular experience, climb Pidurangala at 5:30am to watch Sigiriya Rock emerge from the morning mist in golden light. This is one of the most photographed views in Sri Lanka.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Dalada Maligawa), Kandy — Sri Lanka’s holiest Buddhist shrine and UNESCO World Heritage Site; home to the sacred relic of the Buddha’s tooth

Kandy Lake — the serene man-made reservoir at the heart of the city, built by Sri Lanka’s last king in 1807; beautiful for an evening promenade with temple and hill reflections

💡 TipDon’t miss the 6:30pm evening Puja ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth — ancient drums echo through the golden-lit chambers as worshippers bring offerings of flowers. Nalanda Gedige is often quiet and uncrowded — a wonderful contrast to busy Sigiriya. Visit early morning for the best light on the ancient carvings.

Tea plantation walk & full Ceylon tea factory tour — see the complete tea-making journey from withering and rolling to fermenting and grading; includes free tasting of Ceylon tea

Tea plucking activity with estate workers — strap on a wicker basket and pick your own tea leaves in the emerald hillside rows alongside skilled estate pickers

Gregory Lake — the scenic colonial-era reservoir in the heart of Nuwara Eliya; walk the lakeside path, hire a boat or enjoy a cup of tea at a lakeside cafe

💡 TipThe Peradeniya Botanical Gardens are most spectacular in January–April when the orchids are blooming and the cannonball tree is in flower. Combine Seetha Amman and Hanuman temples in the morning before the tea factory — both are near the highland road to Nuwara Eliya and make for a wonderfully atmospheric stop.

Ravana Falls, Little Adam’s Peak & Nine Arch Bridge

Scenic highland drive from Nuwara Eliya to Ella (~2.5 hours) through tea estates, misty mountain passes and jungle-clad valleys

Ravana Falls — a dramatic 25m three-tiered cascade tumbling over ancient rock faces into a jungle gorge; one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular waterfalls, right beside the main road

Little Adam’s Peak hike (~1.5 hours return) — a beautiful and accessible hill walk through tea estates with sweeping views of the Ella Rock, Rawana valley and surrounding highlands; suitable for all fitness levels

Demodara Nine Arch Bridge — Sri Lanka’s most iconic and photographed railway viaduct; 91 metres long, built entirely from stone and brick in 1921 without any steel; best viewed from the tea estate path above

Arrive Ella town: explore the charming village cafes, souvenir shops and viewpoints; watch the sunset from the famous ridge

💡 TipPosition yourself at the Nine Arch Bridge viewpoint between 8–9am or 3–4pm when trains cross most frequently. The viewpoint above the bridge (reached via a short tea estate walk) gives the classic elevated shot. Ravana Falls is impressive from the roadside — visit in the morning before afternoon traffic builds.

Transfer from Ella highlands to Bentota on the Indian Ocean coast (~3.5 hours)

Arrive Bentota — Sri Lanka’s premier west coast beach resort; check in to your oceanfront hotel

Bentota Beach — a long, golden stretch of calm Indian Ocean beach protected by a river lagoon; ideal for swimming, sunbathing and water sports

Bentota River Safari — explore the Bentota Ganga (river) by private boat, navigating through mangrove channels and visiting a small cinnamon island where cinnamon bark is harvested and peeled

Optional water sports — jet skiing, banana boat, windsurfing, wake boarding or kayaking on the calm lagoon waters (charged separately)

💡 TipThe Bentota River Safari is best in the early morning when wildlife is most active — look for monitor lizards, kingfishers, egrets and water monitors in the mangrove channels. Ask to stop at the cinnamon island for a fascinating demonstration of how Ceylon cinnamon is harvested — the fragrance is extraordinary.

Madu Ganga River boat safari (~1.5 hours) — glide through the UNESCO-listed Madu Ganga wetland ecosystem; a vast network of mangrove islands teeming with bird life, monitor lizards, water snakes and rare orchids

Visit a traditional fish market island and a Buddhist temple island accessible only by boat within the Madu Ganga system

Kosgoda Sea Turtle Hatchery — an ethical conservation centre protecting all five of Sri Lanka’s sea turtle species; see protected nests and hatchlings, and if timed right, watch baby turtles released into the Indian Ocean at sunset

Afternoon at leisure — swim in the Indian Ocean, relax in a beach hammock, or indulge in a traditional Ayurvedic full-body oil massage at the resort spa

Optional: Hikkaduwa glass-bottom boat tour (30 mins north) — snorkel with sea turtles over a vibrant coral reef

💡 TipThe Madu Ganga and Bentota River safaris are two of Sri Lanka’s finest boat experiences — do both if possible. Madu Ganga is wider, wilder and more biodiverse; Bentota River is narrower and more intimate. Time the Kosgoda turtle hatchery visit for sunset (5:30–6:30pm) to witness the magical baby turtle release into the ocean.

Old Parliament Building (now Presidential Secretariat) — a magnificent neo-baroque colonial building facing Galle Face, a landmark of Colombo’s historic waterfront

Night life in Colombo — rooftop bars overlooking the Indian Ocean, live music venues or the fine dining scene at the Dutch Hospital and Galle Face Hotel

💡 TipThe Gangaramaya Temple is at its most atmospheric during the full moon Poya days — check the calendar. The Lotus Tower observation deck is best at dusk (5–6pm) when you can enjoy both the daytime panorama and the city lighting up at night. Book your tower entry in advance to avoid queues. Dinner at the Dutch Hospital is highly recommended.
