What You’ll Experience
This 9-day private tour is Sri Lanka’s most immersive journey — crafted for travellers who want to experience the island without rushing. Two dedicated days at Sigiriya allow you to savour the rock fortress at dawn on Day 1, then dedicate Day 2 entirely to Dambulla’s caves, an authentic village tour, an Ayurvedic massage and the Minneriya wildlife safari. Kandy receives a full day with all its sacred sites. Nuwara Eliya’s tea country gets the depth it deserves. Ella alone receives two full days — the scenic train, five highland sights, the challenging Ella Rock sunrise hike, the mysterious Ravana Caves and the iconic Nine Arch Bridge. Bentota’s beach, river safaris, turtle hatchery and water sports fill two relaxed days. And Colombo provides a rich final chapter before departure. This is Sri Lanka done properly.

Sigiriya Rock & Pidurangala Sunrise
Welcome at Bandaranaike International Airport — private A/C transfer north to Sigiriya (~4.5 hours)
Sigiriya Rock Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage, 5th century) — climb 200m through royal water gardens, famous cloud maiden frescoes and the mirror wall to the spectacular summit palace ruins
Pidurangala Rock — an alternative summit directly opposite Sigiriya offering the best wide-angle panoramic view of Sigiriya Rock; best attempted at dawn (5:30am) or late afternoon for golden light
💡 TipPrioritise Pidurangala for the sunrise on Day 1 if you arrive at a reasonable time — the image of Sigiriya Rock emerging from morning mist in golden light is one of Sri Lanka’s most breathtaking views. Save Sigiriya itself for a 7am start on Day 2.

💡 TipThe Dambulla Cave Temple is best in the morning when the light enters the cave mouths directly. The Sigiriya village tour is genuinely insightful — ask your guide to show you a traditional clay pot kiln and a handloom weaving demonstration. Book the Ayurvedic massage for the afternoon to allow the oils to absorb before dinner.

💡 TipThe tea plucking activity is most authentic in the morning when estate workers are actively harvesting. Ask at the factory reception to join an estate group rather than a tourist-only session — the experience is far more genuine and fun. Gregory Lake is beautiful at both sunrise and sunset.

Scenic Train Journey & Ella Highland Wonders
Nuwara Eliya to Ella scenic train ride — board at Nanu Oya station and travel through emerald tea valleys, misty mountain passes and jungle-draped ridges on one of the world’s most beautiful railway journeys (~3.5 hours)
Arrive Ella — check into guesthouse and explore the charming village
Little Adam’s Peak hike (~1.5 hours return) — an accessible tea estate hike with breathtaking views of the Ella Valley, Ella Rock and the rolling highlands; suitable for all fitness levels
Rawana Waterfall — a dramatic cascading waterfall just outside Ella town, easily accessible and beautiful in the afternoon light
Demodara Nine Arch Bridge — Sri Lanka’s most iconic railway viaduct, built in 1921 entirely from stone and brick without any steel; best viewed from the tea estate path above the bridge
💡 TipBook the Nanu Oya–Ella scenic train well in advance (at least 3 weeks) — 2nd class observation seats sell out fast, especially December–March. Sit on the LEFT side for the best valley views. Aim for the Nine Arch Bridge at dusk (5–6pm) when the light is golden and the final afternoon train often crosses.

Ella Rock, Ravana Caves & Final Highland Morning
Early morning Ella Rock sunrise hike (~3–4 hours return) — the most challenging and rewarding hike in Ella; 360° panoramic views over the Ella Gap, Highland Valley and Indian Ocean in the far distance
Ravana Caves — ancient cave complex associated with the Ramayana legend, where King Ravana is said to have hidden Sita; the cave network is atmospheric and historically fascinating
Afternoon at leisure in Ella — explore the village’s eclectic cafes, viewpoint bars and souvenir shops; or revisit the Nine Arch Bridge for a different time of day
Farewell highland dinner in Ella — the village’s rooftop restaurants offer spectacular sunset views over the tea valleys below
💡 TipStart the Ella Rock hike by 5:30am for the sunrise — the climb takes 1.5–2 hours through tea estates, bamboo forest and scrub to the summit. The panorama is extraordinary on a clear morning. Bring plenty of water. Note: the path is unmarked in sections — your guesthouse can arrange a local guide for around $5.

Coastal Transfer & Bentota Beach Day
Scenic drive from Ella highlands to Bentota on the Indian Ocean coast (~4 hours via the southern expressway)
Arrive Bentota — Sri Lanka’s premier west-coast beach resort; check into your oceanfront hotel and enjoy lunch on the beach terrace
Bentota Beach — a long, golden stretch of protected Indian Ocean beach with calm lagoon waters; perfect for swimming, sunbathing and watersports
Bentota River Safari — navigate the Bentota Ganga by private boat through mangrove channels, visiting a traditional cinnamon island where bark is harvested and peeled by hand

💡 TipThe Bentota River Safari is best in the early evening when mangrove birds are most active — look for kingfishers, purple herons and white egrets in the golden light. The cinnamon island stop is fascinating — the fresh Ceylon cinnamon fragrance is extraordinary. After the long drive from Ella, an evening swim in the calm lagoon is the perfect recovery.

Madu Ganga, Turtle Hatchery, Shopping & Water Sports
Madu Ganga River boat safari (~1.5 hours) — glide through the UNESCO-listed Madu Ganga wetland ecosystem, a vast network of 64 mangrove islands teeming with wildlife, rare orchids, monitor lizards and water birds
Visit the Buddhist temple island and fish market island accessible only by boat within the Madu Ganga
Kosgoda Sea Turtle Hatchery — an ethical conservation centre protecting all five of Sri Lanka’s sea turtle species; see hatchlings and if timed perfectly at sunset, watch baby turtles released into the ocean
Souvenir shopping at Bentota — the beachside shops and Aluthgama market offer excellent handloom fabrics, lacquer work, Ceylon tea, spices and wooden crafts at reasonable prices
Water sports in Bentota — jet skiing, wake boarding, windsurfing, banana boat and kayaking on the beautiful Bentota lagoon (charged separately)
💡 TipThe Madu Ganga offers a completely different ecosystem to the Bentota River — wider, wilder and more biodiverse. Do both if possible — each offers a different perspective. For souvenir shopping, the Bentota shops near the bridge have the best prices; the Aluthgama spice market (5 mins north) has excellent Ceylon cinnamon and pepper.

Gangaramaya Viharaya (Gangarama Temple) — one of Colombo’s most revered Buddhist temples; the eclectic museum contains a remarkable collection of antique donations including vintage cars, tusks, Buddha statues and artefacts
Galle Face Green terrace — Colombo’s iconic ocean-front promenade; enjoy ‘isso wade’ (prawn crackers) and local life beside the Indian Ocean

Allow 3 hours for airport transfer and check-in.
