Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's most iconic landmark β a 200-metre high ancient rock fortress built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century. The site features extraordinary water gardens, the famous frescoes of cloud maidens, a mirror wall with ancient graffiti, and breathtaking panoramic views from the summit. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
Arrive by 7am to beat the crowds and midday heat. The climb takes about 1β1.5 hours and involves steep stairs β wear good shoes. Combine with nearby Pidurangala Rock for a stunning wide-angle view of Sigiriya itself.
Kandy is Sri Lanka's last royal capital, set among misty hills and centred around the sacred Kandy Lake. The city is home to the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic β the most important Buddhist shrine in Sri Lanka. Known for its vibrant cultural performances and world-class botanical gardens.
Attend the evening Puja ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth (6:30pm) for an unforgettable experience of drums, incense, and devotion. The Esala Perahera festival in July/August features 150 elephants parading the city.
Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka's most celebrated hill station, nestled among rolling tea estates at nearly 2,000m altitude. The cool mountain air, colonial-era bungalows, and endless emerald-green tea plantations create a world unlike anywhere else on the island. Often called "Little England" for its temperate climate and Victorian architecture.
Take the scenic train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (Nanu Oya station) β considered one of the world's most beautiful rail journeys. Dress in layers as temperatures drop below 10Β°C at night. Visit a working tea factory to see how Ceylon Tea is made and enjoy a free tasting.
Hikkaduwa is a vibrant beach resort on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, famous for its colourful coral reef just metres from the shore. Home to sea turtles, tropical fish, and a lively beach culture, Hikkaduwa offers the perfect blend of water sports, wildlife, and relaxed coastal living.
Take a glass-bottom boat ride at 7β8am when the water is calmest and visibility is best. Avoid touching the coral β it is a protected national park. For surfing, Narigama Beach has the best consistent waves for beginners and intermediates.
Galle Fort is one of the best-preserved colonial sea fortifications in Asia, built by the Dutch in the 17th century. Today it is a vibrant living town of cobblestoned streets, boutique hotels, art galleries, and excellent cafΓ©s β all within 400-year-old rampart walls with sweeping ocean views.
Walk the full perimeter of the fort walls at sunset β the views of the Indian Ocean bathed in golden light are spectacular. The fort is easily combined with Hikkaduwa (30 mins east) or Mirissa (30 mins west) for a full south coast day.
Matara is Sri Lanka's most southern major city, positioned where the Nilwala River meets the Indian Ocean. Known for its iconic stilt fishermen perched above the waves, Dutch colonial fortifications, and the pristine Polhena Reef β a year-round snorkelling spot teeming with sea turtles.
Visit Polhena Beach for calm, shallow snorkelling with sea turtles β far less crowded than Hikkaduwa and free entry. Photograph the stilt fishermen at Koggala at sunrise (near Ahangama, 15 mins from Galle) for the most iconic Sri Lanka image.
Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's most famous wildlife reserve β a dramatic landscape of boulder-strewn plains, lagoons, and jungle stretching to the Indian Ocean. With the world's highest density of leopards per square kilometre, plus elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species, a Yala safari is a world-class wildlife experience.
Book a private jeep rather than shared β you can stay longer at leopard sightings. The 5:30am safari slot gives the best light and most active wildlife. Stay overnight at a jungle lodge to experience the park at dusk and dawn β when leopards are most active.
Ella is a small highland town that has captured the imagination of travellers worldwide β thanks to its iconic Nine Arch Bridge, breathtaking mountain views through the Ella Gap, and the world-famous scenic train journey through tea country. Despite its fame, Ella retains a charming village atmosphere with excellent cafΓ©s, hiking trails, and cool highland air.
Book train tickets at least 3 days in advance β the Kandy to Ella route (ExpoRail observation car) sells out fast. For the Nine Arch Bridge, visit at 8:15am or 3:30pm when freight trains cross β the timing varies so confirm locally. Hike Ella Rock at dawn for cloud-sea views.
The Dambulla Cave Temple is a breathtaking complex of five sacred caves cut into a massive granite outcrop, containing over 150 Buddha statues and 2,100 square metres of ancient ceiling frescoes. Dating back over 2,000 years and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the best-preserved cave temple complex in Asia.
Visit early morning (7β9am) before tour groups arrive β the caves are serene and the light beautiful. Dress conservatively (shoulders and knees covered) β white cloth sarongs are available to hire at the entrance. Combine with nearby Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa for a full Cultural Triangle day.
Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka's first capital city, founded in the 4th century BC. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it contains the world's oldest living tree β the Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a branch of the original Bodhi Tree. The site sprawls across 40 square kilometres of ancient ruins, enormous white stupas, and sacred ponds.
Hire a bicycle to explore the widely spread ruins β the site is too large to walk comfortably. Visit the Sri Maha Bodhi at dusk when pilgrims gather for evening prayers. Dress conservatively (shoulders and knees covered) for all religious sites.
Mirissa is a small golden-sand beach town on Sri Lanka's south coast β famous worldwide as one of the best whale watching destinations on earth. The deep ocean waters just offshore are a feeding ground for the planet's largest creature β the blue whale. Beyond whale watching, Mirissa's crescent beach and Parrot Rock viewpoint make it a perfect retreat.
Whale watching boats depart at 6β7am β the morning calm gives best sightings and a smoother ride. Blue whale sightings are most reliable DecemberβApril. Choose an ethical operator that follows responsible whale-watching guidelines. Combine with a day trip to nearby Galle Fort (30 mins west).
Negombo is the first destination most visitors experience in Sri Lanka, just 35km north of Colombo's international airport. A charming town with a rich fishing heritage, Dutch-era canals, and a long sandy beach, Negombo offers an authentic introduction to Sri Lankan coastal life. The morning fish market is one of the most vibrant in the country.
Start your Sri Lanka journey by arriving in Negombo the night before β you'll feel relaxed and ready. Visit the fish market at 6am when the catch arrives. A half-day canal boat tour through the Dutch network is a peaceful way to experience local life before your main tour begins.
