Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka: A Month-by-Month Guide

Last updated: September 2026.

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons hitting opposite coasts at different times. There’s no single bad month to visit the island. There’s only a bad month for the specific coast you’re heading to. This guide breaks the weather down month by month, plus the best time for specific regions and activities.

Quick summary

  • West, south coast, and hill country: best December to March.
  • East coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay): best May to September.
  • Cultural Triangle: good year-round, driest December to September.
  • Yala safari: February to July for the driest, most concentrated wildlife viewing.
  • April and October-November are shoulder months with lighter crowds and lower prices.

The south coast (Galle, Mirissa, Unawatuna, Tangalle) follows the west coast pattern: December to March is its dry season, and May to August brings the Yala monsoon. Peak tourist season runs December to March, with a smaller second peak in July and August for the east coast and the Kandy Esala Perahera.

The two monsoons

The Yala monsoon hits the southwest coast, west coast, and hill country from May to September. The Maha monsoon hits the northeast and east coast from October to January. Each brings heavy rain to one side of the island while the other side stays mostly dry.

This is why Sri Lanka works as a year-round destination once you know which coast to target.

December to March: peak season

This is the best window for Colombo, Galle, Bentota, Mirissa, Kandy, and the hill country. Rain is rare, humidity is lower in the hills, and this is when whale watching in Mirissa is at its best.

It’s also peak season everywhere else, so hotel prices in Ella, Sigiriya, and the south coast run higher than the rest of the year, and popular spots get crowded around Christmas and New Year.

April: the shoulder month

April sits between the two monsoons. Most of the island gets a short window of good weather, including the east coast before its dry season fully kicks in. It’s also Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April, which means some businesses close for a few days and domestic travel spikes.

May to September: east coast season

While the west and south coasts get their wet season, Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are dry and sunny. This is the window for east coast beaches, diving in Trincomalee, and surfing in Arugam Bay.

The west and south coasts still get visitors during these months. Rain tends to arrive in short afternoon bursts rather than all-day downpours, so a trip built around Kandy, Sigiriya, and the Cultural Triangle still works reasonably well since those inland areas are less affected than the coast itself.

October to November: the other shoulder

The east coast starts its wet season while the west and south coasts dry out again. This is a lower-tourist window for the west and south, with lighter crowds and better hotel rates before December’s peak season starts.

Rainfall and temperature by month

Averages below are for Colombo and the west coast unless noted; the east coast runs roughly opposite.

  • January-February: driest months for the west, south, and hill country. Daytime highs around 30°C on the coast, 20°C in Nuwara Eliya.
  • March: still dry and warm, with humidity starting to build before the first monsoon rains.
  • April: transitional. Short afternoon showers become more frequent by the end of the month.
  • May-June: the Yala monsoon begins on the west and south coasts. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay turn dry and sunny.
  • July-August: the southwest monsoon eases on the coast to shorter showers but keeps the western hill country wet; the east coast holds its dry season.
  • September: west coast rains ease off; the east coast’s dry season is ending.
  • October-November: a second transitional window, with rain moving to the east coast as the Maha monsoon starts.
  • December: the west, south, and hill country dry out and peak season begins.

Best time by region

  • Colombo, Galle, Bentota, Mirissa: December to March
  • Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, hill country: December to March, with January and February driest
  • Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa (Cultural Triangle): year-round, drier December to September
  • Yala National Park: February to July, dry season concentrates wildlife near water sources
  • Trincomalee, Arugam Bay (east coast): May to September

These regional windows also line up with specific activities. See the full first-timer’s guide for how to combine regions into a complete itinerary.

Best time by activity

  • Whale watching in Mirissa: November to April, with the best odds December to March.
  • Surfing in Arugam Bay: April to October, peaking June to August.
  • Safari at Yala: February to July, when the dry season concentrates wildlife around remaining water sources.
  • Hiking Adam’s Peak: the pilgrimage season runs December to May; the trail is officially closed outside these months and the summit is frequently cloud-covered even when open.
  • Diving and snorkeling near Trincomalee: May to September, when visibility is highest on the east coast.
  • Kandy Esala Perahera festival: usually late July or early August, worth timing a Kandy visit around since accommodation books out well in advance.

What this means for planning a trip

If your itinerary combines the Cultural Triangle, hill country, and south coast, December to March gives you good weather everywhere at once. That’s why it’s peak season.

If you’re traveling May to September and want good weather guaranteed, lean east: Trincomalee or Arugam Bay instead of Mirissa or Hikkaduwa. Or stick to the Cultural Triangle and hill country, which hold up reasonably well outside their driest months.

Common mistakes when timing a trip

Booking December to March for an itinerary that’s entirely east coast. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are in their wet season during peak season everywhere else.

Assuming one bad-weather day ruins the whole trip. Rain on the west and south coasts during the monsoon usually arrives in short afternoon bursts, not all-day downpours.

Ignoring festival dates. The Kandy Esala Perahera and Sinhala/Tamil New Year in mid-April both affect hotel availability and prices independent of the weather pattern.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Sri Lanka overall?

February. It falls in the dry season for the west coast, south coast, and hill country, and is also within the good window for a Yala safari.

Is Sri Lanka rainy all year?

No. Rain is concentrated in monsoon seasons that hit opposite coasts at different times, so at least one coast has good weather in any given month.

When should I avoid visiting Sri Lanka?

There’s no single month to avoid entirely. Avoid the west and south coasts May to September, and avoid the east coast October to January.

Is Sri Lanka good for a winter sun trip?

Yes. December to March is peak season on the west and south coasts and the most reliable window for guaranteed sun.

Does the time of year affect trip length planning?

Yes. See the full guide to trip length for how season and region combine to shape an itinerary.

When is the monsoon in Sri Lanka?

The Yala monsoon brings rain to the west coast, south coast, and hill country from May to September. The Maha monsoon brings rain to the north and east from October to January.

What is the peak tourist season in Sri Lanka?

December to March, when the west coast, south coast, and hill country are all dry. July and August are a smaller second peak for the east coast and the Kandy Esala Perahera.

What is the worst time to visit Sri Lanka?

May and June are the wettest months for the west and south coasts, and November to December is the wettest stretch on the east coast. The island still has a dry region in both windows.

What is the best time to visit the south coast of Sri Lanka?

December to March. Galle, Mirissa, and Tangalle are dry and the sea is calm, which is also when whale watching from Mirissa is at its best.
