Sri Lanka holds a central place in the Ramayana — the land where Ravana ruled, where Sita was held in Ashok Vatika, and where Rama’s army built the legendary bridge to rescue her. This 8-day private pilgrimage takes you through the temples, forests and hill country where these events are believed to have unfolded — from Kelaniya’s Vibhishana Temple near Colombo, along the coast to the ancient Shiva temples of Chilaw and Trincomalee, up into the misty hills of Nuwara Eliya where Ashok Vatika and Seetha Amman Temple stand, and on to Ravana’s Cave and Kataragama. Vegetarian meals, Tamil-speaking guiding, and help arranging poojas at each temple are all available on request — all in your own private air-conditioned vehicle, at your own pace.

Airport → Colombo → Kelaniya
Arrival & Vibhishana Temple, Kelaniya
Welcome at Bandaranaike International Airport, Negombo — private A/C transfer
Visit Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara — the Vibhishana Temple, sacred to both Buddhists and believers in the Ramayana as the residence of King Vibhishana
Visit Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam and other Hindu temples in Colombo’s Bambalapitiya district
Orientation briefing on the Ramayana trail ahead with your guide, including temple etiquette and pooja arrangements
Check in and settle at your hotel in Colombo or Negombo
Evening at leisure — vegetarian dinner and early rest ahead of tomorrow’s early departure
💡 TipKelaniya Temple is especially significant on Duruthu Poya (January full moon), but is a rewarding, uncrowded visit any day of the week. Remove leather items and dress modestly before entering any temple on this trail.

Colombo → Chilaw → Trincomalee
Munneswaram & Manavari Temples, Chilaw
Drive north to Chilaw and visit Munneswaram Temple, one of Sri Lanka’s oldest Shiva temples, believed to pre-date the Ramayana
Continue to nearby Manavari Temple — where Lord Rama is believed to have installed Sri Lanka’s very first Shiva lingam after defeating Ravana
Drive along the coast to Trincomalee (approx. 3.5 hours), passing fishing villages, lagoons and coconut country
Check in to your Trincomalee hotel and relax by the bay
Optional evening walk along Trincomalee’s beaches or Marble Bay
Evening at leisure — vegetarian dinner at your hotel
💡 TipMunneswaram and Manavari are both active worship sites — let your guide know in advance if you’d like to join a pooja or make an offering. Modest dress is expected at both temples.

Trincomalee → Kandy
Koneswaram Temple & Swami Rock
Morning visit to Koneswaram Temple on Swami Rock — a clifftop Shiva temple where Rama is said to have worshipped after defeating Ravana
Visit Bhadrakali Amman Temple and walk historic Fort Frederick, which surrounds the Koneswaram temple grounds
Optional visit to “Lovers’ Leap” viewpoint just behind the temple, with sweeping views over the Indian Ocean
Depart Trincomalee and begin the drive inland toward the hill country (approx. 4–5 hours)
Arrive Kandy in the evening — check in and relax after a full day of travel
💡 TipKoneswaram is at its most atmospheric at sunrise, with far fewer visitors. The temple as it stands today was rebuilt in the 1950s after the original 17th-century structure was destroyed — but the site itself has been sacred for over a thousand years.

Kandy → Nuwara Eliya
Seetha Amman Temple & Ashok Vatika
Drive from Kandy up into the hill country to Nuwara Eliya (~3 hours) via Ramboda Pass
Visit Seetha Amman Temple — believed to mark the site where Sita was held captive by Ravana, beside a stream said to bear her footprints
Explore Ashok Vatika at nearby Hakgala Gardens — said to be the very “pleasure garden” where Sita was kept
Visit Gayathri Peedam, a Hindu shrine within the Hakgala Gardens complex
Evening at leisure — settle into your highland hotel; vegetarian dinner available on request
💡 TipAsk the temple priest at Seetha Amman to point out the footprint-marked stones nearby. Hakgala Gardens is a working botanical garden as well as a pilgrimage site, so allow a couple of hours to see both properly.

Nuwara Eliya → Ramboda → Ella
Ramboda Hanuman Temple & Ravana’s Ella
Depart Nuwara Eliya and drive to Ramboda — visit Sri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple, a striking hillside shrine overlooking the valley
Continue on to Ella (approx. 2 hours) through tea country and waterfalls
Visit Ravana Ella Falls — believed to be where Ravana bathed with Sita, tumbling 25 metres into a natural pool
Explore Ravana Cave (Ravana Ella Cave) — where Ravana is said to have hidden Sita, reached by a short hillside climb
Evening at leisure in Ella — vegetarian dinner and rest
💡 TipRavana Ella Falls is at its most powerful just after the monsoon (roughly October–January) but flows year-round. The cave requires a short, moderately steep climb — comfortable shoes are recommended.

Ella → Kataragama
Divurumpola Temple & Kataragama
Visit Divurumpola Temple — where Sita is believed to have undergone Agni Pariksha, the trial by fire, to prove her purity
Drive south to Kataragama (approx. 3 hours) through Yala’s buffer forests
Visit Kataragama Temple — one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred multi-religious pilgrimage sites, revered by Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims alike
Optional: witness the evening pooja ceremony at the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya
Evening at leisure — vegetarian dinner at your hotel
💡 TipKataragama’s evening pooja is a striking, drum-led ceremony — arrive by 6:30pm to find a good spot. The temple complex includes both a Buddhist stupa and a Kiri Vehera, so allow time to see the full site.

Kataragama → Colombo
South Coast & Return to Colombo
Morning at leisure, or an optional early safari at nearby Yala or Bundala National Park
Drive along the south coast toward Colombo (approx. 5–6 hours), with stops as time allows
Optional: brief stop at Galle Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-listed colonial fortress on the coast
Arrive Colombo in the evening and check in to your hotel
Farewell dinner reflecting on the pilgrimage trail you’ve completed
