Climb Sigiriya by 7am — the summit is far cooler and the light is spectacular. The final 200 steps involve steep iron staircases; wear closed shoes. Combine with Pidurangala Rock (30 min opposite) for the best wide-angle Sigiriya view.

Don’t miss the evening Puja ceremony at Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth (6:30pm) — the atmosphere of drums and incense is unforgettable. Visit Galle Fort at golden hour — the rampart walk with ocean views at sunset is one of Sri Lanka’s greatest experiences.

Book the Kandy–Ella scenic train at least 3 weeks in advance. For Yala, always opt for the 5:30am slot — leopards and elephants are most active in the first two hours after sunrise. The dry season (Feb–July) gives the best Yala visibility.

For the best leopard sightings: book a private jeep (not shared) and ask your tracker to wait patiently at a sighting spot. Mirissa whale watching is most reliable November–April. Arrive Galle Fort by 5pm for the golden hour ramparts walk.

Position yourself at the Nine Arch Bridge viewpoint between 8–9am or 3–4pm when trains cross most frequently. Book the train at least 2 weeks ahead — the observation carriage sells out fast Dec–March. Sit on the LEFT side of the train for the best valley views.

Children under 5 enter Sigiriya, Dambulla and most sites for free. Pinnawala is best visited at 10am when elephants are bathed in the river — book this 2am slot to coincide with your drive north. The Ella train is perfectly safe for children — just hold their hands near the open doors!
