The Perfect 7-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary

Last updated: September 2026.

Seven days is enough to cover Sri Lanka’s cultural heart, its cool tea-country hills, a wildlife safari, and two nights on the beach, without feeling rushed. Here’s the route that fits all four into a week.

Quick summary

  • Route: Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala, south coast, in one direction with no backtracking.
  • Best for: first-time visitors who want heritage, hill country, safari, and beach in one week.
  • Book the Kandy-to-Ella train seats well ahead, especially December to March.
  • Doesn’t include Sigiriya or the Cultural Triangle; add 2-3 days for those.

Why this route, and not another one

Sri Lanka’s regions sit in a rough line: Colombo on the west coast, Kandy and the Cultural Triangle inland, hill country in the center-south, Yala National Park below that, and the south coast beaches closing the loop back toward Colombo. This itinerary follows that line in one direction, so you’re never backtracking. Each overnight stop is a genuine highlight, not just a stopover.

Day 1: Arrival and Kandy

Land in Colombo and head straight inland, about a 3-hour drive to Kandy. Most private tours build in a stop at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage on the way, where rescued and captive-bred elephants are cared for and bathed in the river twice a day.

In Kandy, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the country’s most important Buddhist shrine. Round off the evening with a walk around Kandy Lake or a Kandyan cultural dance show.

Day 2: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

Before leaving Kandy, most itineraries add the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, home to one of Asia’s largest orchid collections. Then it’s roughly 2.5 hours up into the hills to Nuwara Eliya, nicknamed “Little England” for its colonial-era bungalows and cool climate.

Stop at a working tea factory en route for a tour and tasting. Nuwara Eliya sits at over 1,800 meters, so evenings here are genuinely cool. Pack accordingly (see our Sri Lanka packing list for what to bring for the hill country specifically).

Day 3: Nuwara Eliya to Ella

This is the day most people build the whole trip around. The train journey between the hill country towns runs through tea estates, tunnels, and viaducts, with the Nine Arch Bridge as the signature stop. Seats sell out weeks ahead in peak season, so this leg needs booking early if you want the train rather than a scenic drive.

Once in Ella, the Nine Arch Bridge itself and Little Adam’s Peak (a manageable hour-long hike) are both walkable from most guesthouses.

Day 4: Ella to Yala

Head down out of the hills toward Yala National Park, Sri Lanka’s most visited safari park and one of the best places in Asia for leopard sightings, alongside elephants, sloth bears, and crocodiles. Settle in near the park in the afternoon, ready for an early start the next morning.

Day 5: Yala safari to the south coast

Safari drives run at dawn, when animals are most active and the heat hasn’t set in. A typical drive runs 3 to 4 hours. Budget around $30-35 per person for the park’s foreign entrance fee on top of the jeep and guide cost. Afterward, it’s on to the south coast, roughly 2 to 3 hours depending on which beach town you choose: Mirissa, Bentota, and Unawatuna are the most common bases.

Days 6-7: South coast beach and departure

The last two days are deliberately unstructured. Mirissa is well known for whale watching (in season, roughly November to April) and a laid-back surf and beach scene. Galle Fort is a short drive away if you want one more cultural stop, a Dutch colonial-era walled city with cafes, boutiques, and ocean views along the ramparts. Fly out of Colombo on day 7, roughly 2 to 3 hours from most south coast towns.

Choosing a beach base

Mirissa suits whale watching and a younger, surf-and-cafe crowd. Bentota suits water sports and resort-style stays. Unawatuna has calmer swimming beaches, good for families. Galle Fort itself isn’t a beach town, but pairs well as a half-day add-on to any of the three.

What this itinerary leaves out

Seven days can’t cover everything. Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the Cultural Triangle’s ancient cities (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla) sit north of Kandy and need at least 2 extra days to include properly without cutting into the hill country or beach time. If those are on your must-see list, a 10-day version of this route works better.

How much this trip costs

A private 7-day trip with a driver-guide, accommodation, and most meals typically runs in the mid-hundreds of dollars per person for budget hotels, rising into the low thousands for four- and five-star stays. On top of that, budget separately for entrance fees: the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the botanical gardens, and Yala’s park fee add up to roughly $50-70 per person across the week. See the full cost breakdown for a wider range of budget levels.

Best time to do this itinerary

December to March is the most reliable window, since it covers the dry season for the hill country, Kandy, and the south coast all at once. Whale watching in Mirissa also peaks in this window. Traveling May to September still works for the hill country and Kandy legs, but expect more rain on the south coast finish. See the full month-by-month guide before locking in dates.

What to pack

This route crosses two climates in a week: hot coastal lowlands and a genuinely cool hill country. Pack a light jacket or fleece for Nuwara Eliya and Ella evenings, plus one modest outfit for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. See the complete packing list by season for the full rundown.

How this compares to other trip lengths

This 7-day route is one region combination out of several that work at different trip lengths. A shorter 5-day version drops the Yala safari and keeps Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and a beach finish. A 10-day version adds Sigiriya and more time in the hill country without cutting anything from this route. See the full guide to trip length for how to decide between them.

Tips for a smoother trip

Book the Kandy-to-Ella train seats as early as possible, ideally the moment your dates are fixed; this is the single most common bottleneck in this itinerary.

Carry small denominations of cash for temple donations and entrance fees; card machines are inconsistent outside major hotels.

Start the Yala safari drive as early as the park allows. Wildlife activity drops sharply after the first two hours of daylight.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for Sri Lanka?

Yes, for one region combination like this one (heritage plus hill country plus beach). It’s tight if you also want Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle; 10 days handles that better.

Should I book the Kandy-Ella train in advance?

Yes, especially for first- and second-class seats in the December-to-March high season. Observation-car and unreserved seats can sometimes be arranged closer to the date, but availability isn’t guaranteed.

Can this itinerary be done without a private driver?

Public trains and buses cover the same route, but connections between Yala and the south coast are far easier with private transport, and it saves meaningful time across the week.

Can I add Sigiriya to this 7-day itinerary?

Not without cutting a day elsewhere. Sigiriya sits north of Kandy, so adding it properly needs 2 extra days; the 10-day version of this route includes it without compromise.

What’s the best month specifically for this route?

February. It falls in the dry season for the hill country, Kandy, and the south coast, and is within the good window for both whale watching and the Yala safari.

This route runs as our 7 Days Sri Lanka Heritage, Hill Country & Beach Tour, with private transport, accommodation, and a chauffeur guide arranged for every leg above. See the complete Sri Lanka travel guide for the rest of the planning picture.
